#Linsanity

Sports fan or not, you have probably heard by now about Jeremy Lin’s rags-to-riches NBA story. The New York Knicks point guard, who had previously been let go by two teams, made it to the NY Knicks as a backup. And after a lot of injuries, Jeremy Lin finally got his chance on February 4. From that day he has led the Knicks to a winning streak and scored at least 20 points every single game.

The impact on his official Twitter account has been both swift and immense. Lin has seen his Twitter Count rally from a reasonably 45,000 users to an astonishing amount of 500,000 followers in just two weeks. He seemingly emerged from experienced benchwarmer to become an international phenomenon and fan favorite, with more than 20,000 people checking Jeremy Lin’s Twitter stats in the last week.

Just look how happy @Jlin7 looks! We tried to make him even more happy by letting him know that he probably will reach more than 750,000 followers in 15 days, and a 1,000,000 followers in 30. Now, ain’t that something?

We have been tracking the Twitter stats of Jeremy Lin since November 11, 2010. On his profile page you can see how many followers Jeremy Lin lost or gained and what the prediction is for tomorrow.

Are Tweeps sexier than Facebook users?

Last Tuesday was Valentine’s day and marketing agency Euro RSCG took the time to dig into the sex lives of social media users. Based on the survey of 1,000 U.S. men and women, Twitter users think of themselves as more sexy, sexually adventurous and skilled lovers than Facebook users do. Ain’t that some good news?

The survey explores the impact of social networking on romantic relationships and uncovers significant differences in the sex lives and desires of Americans, based on politics and social media preferences.

And the winner is…Twitter

Last week we blogged about the Super Bowl and how it triggered people to follow the New York Giants and the New England Patriots on Twitter during the Super Bowl.  And although the Giants won the Super Bowl, the real winner for us was Twitter. With an astonishing 12,233 tweets per second (TPS) in the closing moments of the game and managing 13,7 million tweets in total related to the Super Bowl. The twitter stats really represents the significant growth of Twitter as a platform, during a live event. Here’s an interesting info graphic from Twitter, with the top 3 leading ad hashtags. If you haven’t seen the ads, check out the adscrimmage of Twitter.

With Madonna’s halftime show performance twitter reached 10,245 TPS which also is a record if you compare it with live music events. Unfortunately Madonna doesn’t have a Twitter account, but she’s a big fan of Google+ where she has more than 685,231 followers and also has been listed in the top 100 most followed people on Google+. Needless to say that if Madonna had a Twitter account, she would also spike in followers. And than we also could show you how this data looked like in an interesting graph. But we don’t, so why don’t you check out her Google+ stats. If you’re not so into Google+ you could predict how many followers you (or any other user) would  gain and share your prediction with your followers. You can find this handy tool tool right under your weekly graph and it looks like this:

With more live events to come and knowing that the Super Bowl 2012 did extremely well. We won’t be surprised with all the great sports, music events and the US presidential elections coming up. That it’s a mather of time that Twitter records will be break again coming year.. It’s going to be a twitterafic year!

Have a good day and enjoy Twitter. Cheers!

Can Twitter predict the Super Bowl winner?

Exciting times ahead for fans of the Giants and Patriots this Sunday because of the Super Bowl. A fun way to ‘predict’ the winner of this years’ Super Bowl, is by looking at their follower growth on Twitter. Totally non-substantive but wouldn’t it be cool if it had some predictive value?

So… how are the two teams doing on Twitter?
The Patriots are leading in followers: 307,000 vs the 220,000 followers of the Giants. But to be honest, the Patriots did have more time to build their community as they started their Twitter adventure on March 14, 2009.

The Giants started two years later, in 2011, and they are really catching up right now. The difference between the two teams is a little bit over 85,000 followers. Although it might be a bit easier now to get more followers, then back in 2009 when less people where using Twitter, this is still an impressive score by the Giants. Like on January 23, when the giants won the game against the San Francisco 49ers, gaining 15,000+ followers in just 4 days!

The Patriots aren’t to mess with either. They truly spiked big time with gaining 28,000+ followers in 4 days from January 14 due, when playing the Denver Broncos and winning this game.

Spike in followers for the Patriots on the 13th

Also the tweet of @ochocinco a day before this game must have helped. He sent out this call-to-action to his 3,204,927 followers:

But the Giants have Curtis Jackson A.K.A. 50cent on their side, which is a big fan of the NY Giants and made this painfully clear by making a bet with somebody on Twitter:

It’s 50′s way (5,751,980 followers) to hype his team and getting all excited, but unfortunately he didn’t mentioned the Twitter name @Giants and that could be the reason why the Giants didn’t gained thousands of new followers on Twitter by this ” Million dollar” tweet. Mr. Curtis Jackson, if you really want The Giants to win: do mention them, aaaiighht?!

Tweet per minute?
Twitter made their own Super Bowl scoreboard called the The Road to the Super Bowl. The site tracks all conversations and mentions about this years Super Bowl, and shows who’s winning when it comes to the most tweets per minute. I think it’s obvious that the teams who made it to the finals every time, spiked in followers due to massive retweeting / sharing / cheering their team on Twitter.

And the winner is…
So far, the Patriots has a slight advantage over the Giants, but the kickoff is scheduled for coming Sunday 6:30 p.m. (ET) from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and with 50cent as biggest fan,  this game is far from over.
